Faye Toogood’s The Astronomer is a bronze sculpture resembling a flattened, creased leather coat. On closer inspection, the patinated bronze reveals a structural reverse side with a striking cerulean blue hue, inspired by Alessandro Pampurino’s Renaissance ceiling grisaille in Gallery 64a of the V&A. Part of Toogood’s The Cloakroom project, The Astronomertransforms a familiar garment into an enigmatic sculptural form, bridging craftsmanship, materiality, and historical influence in a contemporary reinterpretation of design and tradition.
