By using oil pastels for the drawing, it creates contrast between the lines and the dark background. Contrast is very apparent in the piece as the pastel tones emerge through the dark background. The addition of the silver leaf comes together with the representation of pearls and chains, suggesting their delicacy but also hardness of the surfaces.
